Rookie forward Kaine Geldart is this week's player in “Breaking the Ice with…” The feature showcases different players so we can get to know the Whalers better.

A steal in the late rounds, Geldart was selected in the 12th round (229th overall) in the 2005 OHL Draft by Plymouth. He didn't waste any time picking up his career firsts by scoring his first career goal in just his second game, his first assist in his third game, and his first fight in his sixth game. The Kingston, Ontario, native took a few minutes after practice to help us break the ice and chat about his twin brother, playing soccer, and what happens when he gets mad.

» On the best advice he has been given…

“Never give up.”

» On his youth hockey highlight…

“Scoring the winning goal in the All-Ontario’s to win the bronze medal my major bantam year with Greater Kingston.”

» On how he started playing hockey…

“I started just skating when I was young with my dad and then I started playing on house league teams not too long after that. I played with both of my brothers for a couple years when we first started playing hockey. My brother Kyle is only a year older so it worked out. Later I played with the Kingston Cougars, then I went to Greater Kingston, and then I went to the Kingston Voyageurs."

» On being a twin…

“I have a twin brother Anthony. We’ve always played on the same team since we started hockey. This is the first time we haven’t been together so it’s a little different not having him here. We’re identical, but we’ve never done any tricks on anyone by switching places. The only way to tell us apart is the little cut I have under my left eye from a high-stick.”

» On his training program with his brother…

“My land and bike trainer Dave’s a good guy and pushes us hard. I started with him two summers ago. He makes us do bike training up hills and running, stuff like that. I also have a land fitness trainer, Bob Tyson, and I started training with him two years ago too. We do weight training and running.”

It's hard to tell identical twins Kaine and Anthony Geldart apart, but there are a few differences. On the ice, Kaine is a right-handed shooting forward and Anthony is a left-handed shooting defenseman. Off the ice, Kaine has a cut under his left eye and a mole on the right side of his forehead. In this photo, Kaine is wearing the blue jersey and Anthony is in white.

» On the championships he has won…

“I won OMHA (Ontario Minor Hockey Association) championships in minor hockey for three years straight.”

» On if he has ever played with any of the guys on the team before…

“I played with (Joe) Gaynor and Pacho (Frank Grzeszczak) before; Gaynor at a prospects tournament and Pacho with the Quebec Bulldogs. Being from Kingston, I never played with Andrew Fournier, but we play pick-up hockey together in the summer.”

» On who has influenced him in hockey…

“My dad because he helps me when I’m down and has always been there.”

» On his most embarrassing hockey moment…

“Jumping over the boards and falling.”

» On working a hockey camp…

“I helped run a little kids hockey camp last summer. It was my birthday and I was standing around showing them a drill and someone came up from behind and smashed a pie in my face.”

» On the player he tries to model his game after…

“Todd Bertuzzi.”

» On billet life…

“My billets Peter and Jackie are great. They’re easy to live with and easy to talk to so it has made the move from home easier for me. I live next door to (Dan) Collins which is nice because he helps me out when I need it and he’s a fun guy to hang out with.”

» On if there is anything behind his jersey number 12…

“There’s nothing behind it. It was just one of the last numbers left and it’s small so I took it.”

» On his rookie year…

“I think so far my rookie year is going ok. The adjustments that I have had to make are that the game is faster and the guys are bigger and stronger.”

» On his fights…

“The first fight (October 7 at Owen Sound against Marcus Carroll), the guys were just chirping all game and then I just got mad and then the last one (December 7 at London against Adam Perry) I got hit the shift before it happened and I got mad again.”

» On his typical day…

“Get up at 6:30, get ready, and go to school at 7, class starts at 7:15. Go through the day, I have 5 classes, at 1:15 I go to the rink for practice, then just go home and hang out with the guys after.”

» On his favorite class…

“Gym.”

» On his pre-game routine…

”I get up around 10, eat, have a sleep, eat, and then head to the rink.”

» On what he brings to the team…

“I’m just a hard working player.”

» On his superstitions…

“I don’t really have a specific superstition, just when I have a good game I’ll try to do the same things before the next game until I play bad and then I have to find a new one.”

» On his nicknames…

“Geldy.”

» On playing soccer …

“I play soccer in the summer and played it all through high school until I came here. It’s just fun and a lot of my friends play it. Last year we won the OFSAA championship, which is like winning a state championship here. It was pretty cool. We won 4-0 in the championship and I scored two goals within the first three minutes of the game.”

» On his dream goal…

“My ultimate dream goal would be in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in overtime against Patrick Roy.”

» On his funniest teammate…

“They’re all funny.”

» On the person he would most like to meet…

“Wayne Gretzky.”

» On what one thing he could not live without…

“Hockey.”

» On his dream vacation…

“Some place warm like Cancun, Mexico.”

» On the rule changes…

“It’s nice because I am a smaller guy and now I can skate and not worry about someone holding onto me or hooking me when I have the puck because of the penalties.”

» On one rule change he would make in hockey…

“Shooting the puck over the glass and getting a penalty for it.”

» On what type of reality TV star he would be on…

“I’d be the quiet, shy person.”

» On what other five players he would want on the ice with him…

“Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux as forwards. My two defensemen would be Nicklas Lidstrom and Wade Redden and goalie would be Patrick Roy.”
