LONDON LEAVES PLYMOUTH MAROONED IN 5-2 VICTORY
PLYMOUTH – Patrick Maroon scored two goals and an assist as the game’s first star and goaltender Jhase Sniderman stopped 27-of-29 shots as the London Knights defeated the Plymouth Whalers, 5-2, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Saturday night before 2,910 at Compuware Arena.
The game leaves London and Plymouth with identical records of 24-16-2-2.
Phil Varone (8), Philip McRae (13) and Tony Romano (10) scored the other goals for London. Plymouth received goals from Ryan Hayes (2) and Taylor Carnevale (6).
After a scoreless first period, London scored twice in a span of 19 seconds in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Varone pounced on a loose puck outside the Whalers’ blue crease area and beat Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett at 7:39. Maroon scored his 24th of the season at 7:58 when he deflected Sean O’Connor’s pass from the right point past Hackett in the slot. Hayes cut the London lead to 2-1 when he roofed a shot from the right circle past Sniderman at 14:02. But McRae restored London’s two-goal when Maroon passed the puck from the left corner in front to McRae, who made no mistake with the shot.
Romano gave London a 4-1 lead with a backhand shot, top shelf, from the left wing lip of the Plymouth crease at 5:44 of the third period. Maroon scored his second of the game and 25th of the season when he skated through the Plymouth slot and beat Hackett with a quick shot from the left wing at 14:57. Carnevale closed the scoring with 17 seconds left in regulation when he beat Sniderman with a shot five-hole from the hash marks.
London outshot Plymouth, 37-29. The London Free Press has a game story.
