WHALERS COME BACK, DEFEAT KINGSTON IN SHOOTOUT, 4-3
PLYMOUTH – Vern Cooper tied the game in the third period with his 14th goal of the season and Chris Terry won it in a shootout as the Plymouth Whalers came from behind to defeat the Kingston Frontenacs, 4-3 in a shootout, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Sunday afternoon before 2,578 at Compuware Arena.
Plymouth is now 28-19-2-2, good for 60 points and third place in the OHL West. Kingston is now 14-31-0-2, good for 30 points.
Andrew Fournier (29) and Brett Bellemore (5) scored first period goals for the Whalers. Nathan Moon (20), Bobby Mignardi (12) and Josh Brittain (19) scored for Kingston in regulation time.
Plymouth trailed, 3-2, at the start of the third period, but pressured Kingston the entire third frame with a 16-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Cooper tied the game after severe pressure in the Kingston zone with linemates Joe Gaynor and Kaine Geldart when he scored from the right lip of the crease past Frontenacs goaltender John Murray.
After a scoreless overtime, Terry scored the lone goal of the shootout when he skated in on Murray and – after several fakes – stuffed a shot from the short side post. Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett stopped all three Kingston attempts on the shootout – by Jesse Brown, Moon and Mathew Kang.
The Whalers outshot Kingston, 44-34.
Plymouth is on the road all of next weekend, playing in Ottawa on Friday, Belleville on Saturday and Kingston next Sunday afternoon. The Whalers next home game is Wednesday, February 13 at 7:05 p.m. against Sarnia.
