PLYMOUTH – Dan Collins’ goal at 13:34 of overtime snapped a 3-3 tie and the Plymouth Whalers went on to defeat the Sudbury Wolves, 4-3, in Game 5 of the Ontario Hockey League Rogers Championship Series. The game was played before 3,359 at the Compuware Sports Arena.
Plymouth leads the best-of seven series three-games-to-two with Game 6 Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Sudbury Community Arena.
Collins tapped home the rebound from a Ryan McGinnis point shot that was originally deflected by Andrew Fournier. Jared Boll (sixth goals of the playoffs), Evan Brophey (9) and Chris Terry (8) also scored for the Whalers. Nick Foligno (11), Justin Donati (13) and Patrik Lusnak (3) scored for Sudbury.
Plymouth pelted Sudbury goaltender Sebastian Dahm with a franchise-record 81 shots and had a 19-1 edge in the overtime. The Whalers’ previous high came on February 2 this season when they had 72 shots in a 10-2 victory over Erie.
Foligno (rebound on the right wing side of the Plymouth goal at 1:51) and Boll (one-timer at 12:15) traded first period goals as the Whalers outshot the Wolves, 28-13.
Plymouth took their first lead of the game in the second period on goals by Brophey (high shot top shelf from the left circle at 6:04) and Terry (backhand shot after skating out of the left corner at 6:53). But Sudbury came back to tie on third period goals by Donati at 3:20 and Lusnak at 13:13.
Plymouth dominated the overtime with Dahm the difference until Collins’ game-winner, his ninth of the playoffs.
