SARNIA WINS SHOOTOUT ON SUNDAY NIGHT
Sarnia, ON - The Sarnia Sting came from behind to defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 4-3 in a shootout, on Sunday night before 3,633 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
Plymouth is now 16-8-1-2; Sarnia is now 17-12-0-0.
Joe McCann (8th of the year on a penalty shot at 8:21 of the first period), Vern Cooper (4th of the year from the right circle at 12:34 of the first period) and Michal Jordan (2nd of the year and first as a Whaler on a hard shot through traffic at 3:14 of the second period) scored for Plymouth.
Steven Stamkos scored twice for Sarnia and now has 28 goals. Former Whaler Steve Whitely tied the game for Sarnia at 3-3 at 11:30 of the third period when he intercepted a Plymouth clearing pass at the right point and caromed his shot off Wes Cunningham. Plymouth goaltender Jeremy Smith got most of the shot, but it trickled over the goal line.
After a scoreless overtime, Chris Terry scored in the shootout for Plymouth.
After Smith poke-checked Justin DiBenedetto, Stamkos and Aaron Snow scored to give Sarnia the victory.
About the Plymouth Whalers
The Plymouth Whalers are the only Metro Detroit team in the Ontario Hockey League, a developmental league for National Hockey League players. The Whalers all range in age from 15-21 years-old and are consistently one of the top teams in the OHL. In 2006-07, the Whalers won the OHL Championship.
